The tenet of Modesty is oftentimes hard to fully understand, especially for children. Modesty is a basic characteristic of one’s personality that is delivered through behavior, similar to humility. By definition, modesty is showing reserve or propriety in speech, dress or behavior.

Through training in the Martial Arts, boasting and showboating about rank and skills are not only discouraged, they are dangerous and can lead to trouble.  Displaying modesty is taught throughout your time in the dojo as well as shown through instructor example.

Modesty can bring significant benefits to an individual. It can strengthen reputation and character bringing forth a higher level of respect from family and peer group.  Modesty can also act as a protective guard when life’s temptations are calling out to you.

No business, career, profession, or friend should require you to be immodest. In the Martial Arts, we teach students that behavior choices, at the end of the day, are just that- they are choices.  The choice of modesty belongs to the individual regardless of environment or pressures.  Carry yourself with modesty and courage to do the right thing… you will never regret these decisions.
