FEBRUARY IS FOCUS MONTH at Boca Raton Karate & Kickboxing Academy.

FOCUS is the topic of the month at the Boca Raton Karate & Kickboxing Academy.  There is a lot behind the word focus and no better place helps define it more than a martial arts dojo.  Focus helps us improve in all areas – our physical abilities, our mental capacity and our spiritual endeavors.

In order to meet goals, you need some level of focus. It’s not necessarily about how much time you spend on your goal, but what you do with the time you have. Those who succeed in the martial arts make the time to learn their material and advance in rank. They don’t practice 24/7 – they designate times to focus on their forms and commit it to memory. This time is dedicated to practice and if distraction can be avoided, then the practice can have maximized, positive results.  There is a focus of mind, body and spirit that takes place in the martial arts.  It’s a great skill to acquire as you grow as a student.

Distraction is easy in today’s environment of super, real-time information. Information bombards us from every angle trying to get our attention. It takes time and determination to sift through the non-important messages and identify the ones that need true focus. This is how goals are created. And once you define your goal, stick with it and don’t sway or get discouraged. While many of us look at multi-tasking as a great skill – and it can be for small, menial tasks – trying to do many important things simultaneously leads to less than optimized results. And even the smaller tasks can suffer when you lose focus – take for example the popular topic in the media of texting and driving. Two relatively easy skills that when combined, can be deadly.

Focus takes practice and commitment. If things don’t go exactly as planned the first time, be prepared to regroup and recommit to your goal. Learn to identify what needs complete focus and 100% attention and what does not. When you need to be tuned in then do it! That is what focus is all about and the success that follows is well worth the effort.
